We tried a little new year's experiment at the Hacienda del Hosta earlier this week. Sometime in December, I off-handedly suggested we do a Whole 30 challenge in January. Wanting to be supportive, Sweet Husband jumped in gung-ho, and off we went.
When we do a thing, we do it all the way. I was allowing myself a smidgen of honey in my coffee, but that was it. No carbs, no dairy, no sugar, no beans.
Planning meals was a little intense, but I like a challenge in that area.
More difficult was the sight of the shopping cart filled to the brim with meat and out-of-season veggies. Also, the tallying up at the check-out--our grocery bill was a whopping 30% higher than normal, and I think most people would think we're outlandish in the first place.
Then there was the fact that the Kid was balking at every dinner. He's a really good eater, and he'll try a bit of anything once. But my baby loves his carbs. When presented with a bowl of meat-and-tomato-only chili, the Kid chose to eat only his cheesy crackers that we'd served along side.
It was quickly becoming clear that we were going to have to start cooking for him separately if we wanted him to eat, which is huge "no" in our house. (He doesn't even understand that eating separate meals is a possibility, and I want to keep it that way for a very long time.)
Another thing? I earn a teensy bit of my living as a food writer these days, so sometimes I don't have complete control over what I cook. Let's just say that it takes a special kind of insanity to fry a batch of hot cinnamon and sugar donuts, photograph them so that they look mouthwatering, watch your child devour one happily, and then feed the rest to the chickens without allowing yourself a single bite.
With all of these things converging, along with a blood sugar level that was not adjusting nearly fast enough, I was quickly becoming a not-so-nice person.
The final straw came when I was sitting in the car, bickering with Sweet Husband while sipping a bark-ish tasting almond milk latte. From the backseat came a small, matter-of-fact voice, "Mama, could you please stop being mean for awhile?"
And that was the end of that.
With all that being said, though, I'm not posting this to discourage anyone. Friends of ours have had great success eating a "paleo" or "paleo-light" diet. And if we could have managed to stick to it a little longer, it probably would have gotten easier. But, looking at the whole picture, it just wasn't worth it for our family.
We celebrated our decision to go back to our typical more whole-food diet by splitting a Chipotle burrito for lunch.
