- Lentil Almond Stir-Fry
- Spinach and Lemon Soup with Orzo
- Rich No-Cream Wild Mushroom Pasta
- Rickshaw Dumplings with Broccoli
- Pizza (I think maybe with brie and fruit, but I reserve the right to change my mind.)

No, it's not just your imagination, there has been an awful lot of sew-y-ness around here lately. The thing is, I got a few new pattern books (thanks Dad!) and a gift certificate for fabric (thanks Anita and David!) for Christmas. And then MLK day weekend came along, and I had some extra time....ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom!

It's Daring Bakers Day again! This month's challenge is brought to us by Karen of Baking Soda and Zorra of 1x umruehren bitte aka Kochtopf. They have chosen Tuiles from The Chocolate Book by Angélique Schmeink and Nougatine and Chocolate Tuiles from Michel Roux. And fortunately for us savory lovers, they also allowed an alternate recipe--savory tuiles from The French Laundry Cookbook by Thomas Keller--which is what I decided to make.

Another one from The Alabama Stitch Book (I'm making myself a skirt from it next!), this is the "Over the Arm Pincushion". One thing I love about this book is the little stories sprinkled throughout. This project was patterned after a similar pincushion made by author Natalie Chanin's grandmother. In the pouch of her grandmother's pincushion, Chanin found the following little poem:

(Ohhh, new idea! Blogging the week's menu at our house. Don't promise it'll be fascinating or even terribly regular, but it'll keep me organized at least...maybe...right? Eh, anyway, here goes....)

Today, I am four. I think Mom is maybe a little sad about this--me entering middle age and all--but I'm completely down with it. I don't mind being older so much, and birthdays always mean fun!

A few weeks ago Stacy (who is pretty much as conservative as I am liberal) was reflecting on the year behind and the year ahead, and said,
"The most hated President in the history of Presidents is about to say goodbye, and we can see if President Elect Obama can make good on his promises. It's sort of like having a backseat driver for the past 8 years and finally throwing up your hands and saying "Would you like to drive? Go ahead!" We'll see if they can do better."
Talk about hitting the nail on the head--I think I snorted my coffee laughing! As one of those backseat drivers, the analogy captures my feelings over the past 8 years just as much as I'm sure it captures Stacy's as a driver.

Another knitting project that got finished up last weekend was this "Weekend (Baby) Afghan" that I've been working on for a friend's soon-to-be arriving small one.

This weekend I made a great discovery. If I sit up in bed just so, I can read and knit at the same time. With a stack o'books on my nightstand, several knitting projects on my "to-make" list, and one very cozy down comforter tucked around me, I may have just found my own little paradise.

Sweet Husband has been on a quest for about a year now--the quest to make tasty homemade biscuits. Over the course of his experimentation with different recipes, we've had dense biscuits, flat biscuits, dry biscuits, you name it. But this morning, Sweet Husband's perseverance finally paid off. This may be the perfect biscuit. (And a little sage and thyme in the gravy? That doesn't hurt either!)

Moe: I'm lodging a protest. I've begged and sat nicely, but Mom says I can't have my own blog. Stanley and Stella have one. Molly and Taffy have one. I want one too!

I've been thinking a lot lately about what makes people family, and I've come to the conclusion that my family is not very biological these days. Rather, it's my people, those who know me and love me anyway, those who if I said, "I have a body to bury," would reply, "Where shall I bring the shovel?"

I got in a few Indian foods from the Omnivore's Hundred last weekend, when some friends talked us into going to India Palace for dinner.
