Send Bricks

For Shutter Sisters' Love Thursday....
When I was a child, I always wanted a sister. In the way that such things often go, my wish came unexpectedly when I was 17--resulting in a sister who is just as much like a daughter or a favorite niece.
Sigh...and lately a young lady.
I got to spend an evening with her last weekend, and I can't believe how much she's grown-up. All of a sudden she has deeper interests, and she's really thinking about the world around her. She's learning to take chances, and use discretion, and accept disappointments with grace....
And while I love the woman she's becoming, I think somewhere in my mind I thought she'd be a little girl forever. I hadn't ever imagined her going away to college, or moving into her first apartment, or--yikes, this one just occurred to me--dating someone.
D'ya think if I tied a brick to her head I could make the growing stop?

LOL, would that you could, but sadly you can't. I know from experience that it just doesn't work. My baby bro came along when I was 17 and we have a similar relationship. I'm getting to live first hand the very things of which you speak... he's in college, living on his own, dating, and GASP drinking... I have to remind myself constantly that I did the same things at his age, but it is SO different because he's my baby brother. Then there are days when he completely sweeps me off guard showing that he is also a thoughtful, caring, and GASP wise young man. And now, he is also a friend.

Ya know it's funny, when I was in high school right after Sweet Sister was born, I felt like I was the only person with a much-younger sibling. But now when I start talking about her, I'm suprised at how many people I know who have a similar age gap with their siblings.

My aunt used to tell my daughter that she was going to duct tape her feet to her butt if she didn't stop growing up. She was 6 when that joke started. She's 10 now, going on 15, I swear...and I wish at times that we could have done that...for just a bit.

She's a lovely young lady! You really captured her beautifully! Oh, how I wish we could freeze time...sigh...they grow so fast.
Take care!

Man at 17 I wanted to DIE! Everyone kept asking if he was mine (or didn't ask and just assumed). To make matters worse, we had just moved so everyone thought it was to cover MY pregnancy, never once thinking that the move might have caused the pregnancey ;o) Now we get asked all the time if we are 'full' siblings...yep, same parents...4 years between me and sis...13 between sis and bro. Probably not a shock that his fetus nicknames were 'Sue Prise' and 'Axy Dent'

Yes, I can remember getting dirty looks from old ladies at the grocery store, and loudly saying, "OK *little sister* lets go look at something else".

Don't worry. My baby sister is a mere 7 years younger than I am, and I still can't believe she's an adult (at age 46). Just the same, I sometimes ask her for advice. :)
